Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said Friday it has started mass production at its first factory in Japan, as the government steps up efforts to strengthen supply chains for critical and essential goods. The factory in Kumamoto Prefecture produces logic chips with 12 to 28 nanometer process technologies for use in cars and image sensors for customers such as Sony Group Corp. and auto parts maker Denso Corp.

Meanwhile, construction of TSMC's 2nd fab in Kumamoto to start in Q1 2025. At an investor conference, TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Commercial production is expected to start in 2027.

Wei said the first plant in Kumamoto, which officially opened on Feb. 24 through the joint venture -- Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM) -- is proceeding very smoothly with all production technologies certified, and will start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.
